Summer is here so many people will be planning weekends away and summer day trips with their families. Many of us look forward to getting out and enjoying the hot weather but it’s important to remember that as temperatures continue to soar it can also be dangerous.
Here are some tips to help you stay healthy during the summer heat:
1. Never forget the sunscreen
It’s important to wear sunscreen every day, especially when it’s hot out. Sunburns can intensify heat-related issues. If you do get sunburned, it’s important to drink plenty of water. Our skin works to protect us from harmful ultraviolet radiation, which is why we should use sunscreen to protect us from damaging UV rays.
2. Keep hydrated
Drinking a lot of fluids, especially water, will keep you hydrated. It helps if you can also avoid alcohol and drinks high in sugar. Your body needs more water than usual when working in a hot environment because you’ll lose more fluids through sweating.
3. Wear appropriate clothes
Dress for the weather with light, breathable clothes, plus sun protection, like hats, scarves, and sunglasses.
4. Avoid hot and heavy meals
Hot and heavy meals add heat to your body. Opt for light meals like salads or light sandwiches. Eat small meals and eat more often. Excessive consumption of meat in the summer season increases the pressure of the digestive system. Try to eat cucumbers, radish, carrot, green leafy vegetables, cantaloupes, strawberries, capsicum, watermelon, coconut water, fruits and vegetables that also contain a large percentage of water.
By following these safety tips, you can still enjoy your summer while staying safe.
